Revenant-47 trudged through the silent remains of a ruined fortress, his mechanical limbs crunching on loose gravel. Flickers of movement danced at the edges of his vision—phantom shapes in the corners of shattered archways. The more he tried to dismiss them, the clearer they became: silhouettes of a life never truly lived.
His mind spiraled. In the recesses of his consciousness, half-formed memories stirred. A child’s laughter on a sunlit farmstead, the warmth of a fire on a winter’s evening—moments that defied the cold steel he now inhabited. He stopped mid-step, breath hissing through respirator vents. Were these dreams echoes of someone else’s past? Or vestiges of his own humanity?
Behind the fortress walls, a gust of wind rattled warped banners. Revenant-47’s sensors flickered in confusion. He blinked, and in that blink, the fortress appeared alive: vines replaced by thriving gardens, rubble replaced by pristine stone. He recoiled. A pressure in his skull built like a siren. A second blink, and reality snapped back to ruin.
Cautiously, he sank against a fractured column. The cold plating of his torso offered no comfort, only emptiness. Each shift in the air threatened another vision, another impossible glimpse of roads he never walked. Fragments of that farmstead wavered at the periphery of his sight, pulling him toward a truth he couldn’t fully grasp.
For a long, echoing moment, he closed his eyes. Then, with a resolve that felt almost human, he stood. If these reflections were indeed glimpses of other timelines or fractured pieces of who he once was, he would find a way to reconcile them. He would not let this uncertainty break him. In the fading twilight, Revenant-47 walked on, determined to uncover whether these tantalizing shards belonged to a man he might still become—or if they were merely illusions haunting the machine he’d become.
